The Center advocates for women’s rights through litigation and policy initiatives. It began when female administrative staff and law students at the Center for Law and Social Policy demanded that their pay be improved, that the center hire female lawyers, that they no longer be expected to serve coffee, and that the center create a women’s program.
The fund supports Women Human Rights defenders throughout the world. Mission of the fund is to support women’s human rights defenders striving to create cultures of justice, equality and peace. For the purpose, UAF partners with women’s movements worldwide.
Despite the progress, Kurdish and international women’s rights organizations still report problems related to gender equality, forced marriages, honor killings and female genital mutilation (FGM) in Iraqi Kurdistan. Different organizations have described the situation differently, sometimes giving conflicting statements.
Women’s reproductive rights may include some or all of the following: the right to legal and safe abortion; the right to birth control; freedom from coerced sterilization and contraception; the right to access good-quality reproductive healthcare; and the right to education and access in order to make free and informed reproductive choices.
Frances Willard, one of the best-known and most influential women of her day, headed the Women’s Christian Temperance Union from 1879 to 1898. She was also the first dean of women, Northwestern University. Her image appeared on a 1940 postage stamp and she was the first woman represented in Statuary Hall, U.S. Capitol Building.
