How much Vitamin B12 do You Need? The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for Vitamin B12 ranges from 0.4 to 2.8μg per day. The daily value for vitamin B12 is 2.4μg per day, which has been recently reduced from 6μg per the USDA food labeling standards. Pregnant women require 2.6μg, and lactacting women should consume at least 2.8μg of vitamin B12.
Although reference ranges can vary from lab to lab, the normal readings for vitamin B12 are approximately 200 to 900 picograms per milliliter, or pg/ml, of blood. Below 200 pg/ml indicates deficiency. If your levels are this low, you likely have symptoms of deficiency. Older adults may have symptoms if their levels are below 500 pg/ml.
Blood tests are usually recommended to analyze the level of Vitamin B12 in the body. However, urine can also be analyzed for determining the level of vitamin B12. You are advised not to eat or drink 6-8 hours before testing. The blood is drawn through the aseptic technique and send for evaluating levels of vitamin B12.
Blood tests for B12 may show elevated levels in people who are (or have recently been) taking vitamin B supplements [ 110 ]. This is usually not of concern as vitamin B12 is not considered toxic.
