We would indeed go with your argument that the number displayed is that of Sallie Mae BUT the call is not being made by Sallie Mae. There must be a scam group behind this horrific scam forcing people to pay money to the scammers, instead of to Sallie Mae. They are able to make the number appear as 888-272-5543 (spoofing).
