We would indeed go with your argument that the number displayed is that of Sallie Mae BUT the call is not being made by Sallie Mae. There must be a scam group behind this horrific scam forcing people to pay money to the scammers, instead of to Sallie Mae. They are able to make the number appear as 888-272-5543 (spoofing).

SPOOFING: Emtec recently learned that our company name and phone numbers are being used in a coordinated spoofing attack. If you are receiving these calls, we do not employ high volume calling centers to ask to speak to your IT leadership. We have filed a complaint with the FCC.
The call-back method allows for some security when you think caller ID spoofing is being used. You could put the caller on hold , and then call the displayed number. If the number is busy or you reached the company they said they are calling from then they are potentially telling the truth.
