The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute have spent more than 30 years training wildlife and conservation leaders from all over the world. SCBI hosts many of the top research scientists in the field of conservation biology, a highly respected research agenda, and extensive experience with applied conservation science.
The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) facilitates and promotes conservation biology programs at the National Zoo. Scientists at SCBI have long been leaders in the study, management, protection and restoration of threatened species, ecological communities, habitats and ecosystems.
Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute In 1923, a consortium of North American museums and universities established a tropical research station on Barro Colorado Island in the Panama Canal Zone. In 1946, the station was transferred to the Smithsonian, and in 1966 renamed the Smithsonian Tropical Biology Institute.
Lineage (evolution) An evolutionary lineage is a temporal series of organisms, populations, cells, or genes connected by a continuous line of descent from ancestor to descendent. Lineages are subsets of the evolutionary tree of life. Lineages are often determined by the techniques of molecular systematics .
Synapsis or syndesis is the lengthwise pairing of homologous chromosomes. Synapsis mainly occurs during prophase I of meiosis I. A protein complex called the synaptonemal complex connects the homologues.
