Home History of the Shakers The founder of the Shakers, Ann Lee, was a blacksmith’s daughter and a mill hand in Manchester, England. Looking for a more personal and emotional religion than the official Church of England, in 1758 she joined a group called the Wardley Society that had left the Quakers.
Shakerism arrived in Kentucky by 1805 when Pleasant Hill was formed. At its peak in the 1850s it was one of the largest Shaker communities in the United States. It had approximately 600 members and 250 building and almost 2,800 acres of land.
The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, commonly known as the Shakers, was a Protestant sect founded in England in 1747. The French Camisards and the Quakers, two Protestant denominations, both contributed to the formation of Shaker beliefs. The French Camisards originated in southern France during the 17th century.
The religious group that we know today as the Shakers was formed in 18th-century England when dissidents from various religions, including English Quakers and Methodists, formed a religious society based on prophetic doctrine.
