  • Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a SERM and how does it work?

SERMs work by sitting in the estrogen receptors in breast cells. If a SERM is in the estrogen receptor, there is no room for estrogen and it can’t attach to the cell. If estrogen isn’t attached to a breast cell, the cell doesn’t receive estrogen’s signals to grow and multiply.

  • Are SERMs safe?

There are also SERMs available for women with a history or family history of breast cancer. SERMs activate or block the estrogen receptors only in certain areas of the body and not others. That can make them safer than estrogen alone or result in fewer side effects.
