Consequently, the Transylvanian Saxons, together with other ethnic German sub-groups in newly enlarged Romania (namely Banat Swabians, Bessarabia Germans, Dobrujan Germans, Bukovina Germans, Satu Mare Swabians, and Zipser Germans ), became part of that country’s broader German minority.
The Saxons’ political objectives were to make German the official language of Transylvania and to consolidate their autonomy. They rejected the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 against the Habsburgs, as well as the idea of a Transylvanian union with Hungary.
Under the influence of Johannes Honterus, the great majority of the Transylvanian Saxons embraced the new creed of Martin Luther during the Protestant Reformation. The first superintendent of the Saxons Evangelical Church, Paul Wiener, was elected by Saxon pastors at a synod on 6 February 1553.
