Vehicles more than 2 metres (6’6) high, 2 metres (6’6) wide or goods vehicles weighing more than 2 tonnes (gross vehicle weight) are not safe to travel through the Rotherhithe Tunnel. Drivers that do not comply could be fined up to £130. The Rotherhithe Tunnel was built in 1908 and was not designed to cope with modern levels of traffic.
Vehicles more than 2 metres (6’6) high, 2 metres (6’6) wide or goods vehicles weighing more than 2 tonnes (gross vehicle weight) are not safe to travel through the Rotherhithe Tunnel. Drivers that do not comply could be fined up to £130. From 2 December 2019, fines will no longer be limited to one per day.
Transport for London (TfL) is to start issuing fines for vehicles that are more than two metres (six foot six inches) wide or two metres high, or goods vehicles weighing more than two tonnes, using the Rotherhithe Tunnel.
I walked towards the church at Rotherhithe through the start of Rotherhithe Street from Elephant Lane where Rotherhithe Street is a walkway between old warehouse buildings. The walkway opens out to the wider road where the church is located. The entrance to St. Mary’s Church from Rotherhithe Street:
