It is important to understand that volunteering in prisons, like any outreach work, is taken on in addition to the core service we provide by phone or email. The first step to exploring your interest in prison support is to find out more about becoming a Samaritans volunteer. Your local branch would be delighted to hear from you.
The American Friends Service Committee does not invest in any company that owns, operates, or manages prisons, regardless of the size of that business or its centrality to the core activities of the company. Additionally, we avoid investments in companies whose primary business involves the design or construction of prisons.
Photograph from The Museum of Colorado Prisons at Facebook. The Museum of Colorado Prisons in Canon City, Colorado, was once the Women’s Correctional Facility that was built in 1935. As of fall of 2019, more than 4,000 prisoners were held in the state’s for-profit prisons. If you want to take a look inside a former prison, stop by the Museum of Colorado Prisons in Cañon City. Built in 1935, it’s housed inside the old Women’s Correction Facility.
