Location Portability and Service Portability are not consistently defined or deployed in the telecommunication industry. In the United States and Canada, mobile number portability is referred to as WNP or WLNP (Wireless LNP).
Portability is a planning tool available only to married couples. It essentially allows a surviving spouse to take the remaining estate tax exemption that the deceased spouse’s estate did not use. It is transferred to the surviving spouse to reduce the overall estate tax once the second spouse passes away.
Portability is the term used when a family/individual wants to transfer or “port” their housing assistance to an area outside of the jurisdiction of the housing authority that first gave them their voucher. Porting in or out of a jurisdiction is an option for eligible households in order to move throughout the United States.
TechTarget Contributor Mobile number portability (MNP) is a service that allows a cellphone or smartphone customer to change telecom carrier and keep the same phone number. The lack of number portability between wireless carriers has kept many consumers in India from changing cell phone service providers.
Local number portability (LNP) is a government mandate that requires voice service providers to allow customers with eligible phone numbers to retain their phone numbers when changing service providers. The process of keeping your phone number when you switch providers is called porting.
