Convicted serial killer Rodney James Alcala, 77, an Orange County man who was on California’s death row, died of natural causes in the early hours of July 24 at a hospital in Kings County, according to a news release from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Rodney James Alcala (born Rodrigo Jacques Alcala Buquor; August 23, 1943) is a convicted rapist and serial killer. He was sentenced to death in California in 2010 for five murders committed in that state between 1977 and 1979.
Police discovered a collection of more than 1,000 photographs taken by Alcala, mostly of women and teenage boys, many in sexually explicit poses. They speculate that some of his photographic subjects could be additional victims.
Prosecutors say that Alcala “toyed” with his victims, strangling them until they lost consciousness, then waiting until they revived, sometimes repeating this process several times before finally killing them.
Alcala also sometimes arranged the corpses of women he’d murdered in poses. In 2010, photos taken by Alcala decades earlier were made public to try to identify other victims. He has been behind bars since his July 1979 arrest for the abduction and murder of a 12-year-old girl.
