The Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark includes the land and mining claims that formed the foundation for the Kennecott Copper Corporation, later the Kennecott Minerals Company. The operation had two components: the mines where ore was extracted from the mountains, and the mill town where the ore was processed.
If you’re interested in visiting Kennecott, here are directions on how to get there. For trip-planning questions, contact the Kennecott Visitor Center. If you’d like to use the Kennecott Recreation Hall, please contact the Wrangell Mountains Center.
In 2019, after 75 years of operation, Kennecott closed its coal-fired power plant in Utah, just outside of Salt Lake City in the United States. Power for the operation will come from renewable energy certificates purchased primarily from wind and solar resources.
These two financial giants formed the Kennecott Mines Company to develop mining operations on the claims purchased from Birch, and Birch was named general manager of the organization.
By 1952, Kennecott was easily the biggest copper producer in the United States; 46 percent of the nation’s primary copper output was produced by Kennecott that year. With addition of the Braden mine in Chile, the company accounted for about 25 percent of the entire copper production of the free world.
