ARA has an enduring relationship with the Archaeology and Heritage Studies Department at Wilfrid Laurier University and has several highly experienced educators on staff. ARA can provide special-topics lectures and archaeological and heritage training programs tailored to suit any context.
Founded in 1939, the Research Laboratories of Archaeology (RLA) was the first center for the study of North Carolina archaeology. Serving the interests of students, scholars, and the general public, it is currently one of the leading institutes for archaeological teaching and research in the South.
When archaeologists first started using the term public archaeology, it referred to archaeological projects funded by the public. Later, it took on meanings that included activities that engage the public in archaeology through lectures, interpretive signs, or tours of sites and excavations.
It is also the institutional home of the Curriculum in Archaeology. With one of the nation’s finest collections of archaeological materials from the South, the RLA curates more than seven million artifacts along with more than 60,000 photographic negatives, photographs, and slides.
With more than 7,000 members, the society represents professional, student, and avocational archaeologists working in a variety of settings including government agencies, colleges and universities, museums, and the private sector.
