• Which insurances cover Omnipod?

  Omnipod is covered under Medicare part D . But unlike pharmaceutical products, Omnipod does not appear on Medicare’s plan finder site since it is a medical device. Still, there are access options for some part D plans under a Tier 3 and Tier 4 co-pay benefit. Curious what Medicare coverage options may be available for you?

• How does the Omnipod deliver insulin?

  The OmniPod is the only insulin pump on the market that does not have a tube connecting the pump with the cannula. Instead, the pump system comes in two devices. First, the Pod is a small device that holds the insulin and cannula. The Pod attaches to your skin with an adhesive and dispenses the insulin.

• How much insulin does Omnipod hold?

  Each pod requires a minimum of 85 units to work and can hold a maximum of 200 units . This system administers both basal and bolus insulin. Omnipod is different from more traditional insulin delivery systems (i.e. pumps) in that it does not require any tubing and connects wirelessly to a handheld device, or a PDM.

• Does Medicare cover Omnipod?

  Medicare does not cover the OmniPod system because they view the OmniPod system as being two separate items; the tubeless insulin pods and the Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM). Although the insulin is considered medically necessary, the tubeless insulin pods that delivers the insulin is disposable, which disqualifies it as being medically necessary.
