BNI Coal, LTD a subsidiary of BNI Energy Inc., is developing North Dakota’s abundant lignite energy resource. At its Center Mine, BNI mines and reclaims about 200 acres a year to supply lignite coal to fuel the nearby Milton R. Young Generation Station.
Lignites are geologically young for coal, having formed anywhere between 251 million years ago and the present. Formed from peat compressed at shallow depths at temperatures below 100 degrees Celsius, or 212 degrees Fahrenheit, lignite beds are easily mined; many are also quite thick.
Centralia currently burns coal from about nine 110-car coal trains each week (i.e. 990 full coal cars). Annually, this coal plant emits 350 pounds of mercury pollution, making it the state’s largest single source of mercury pollution.

The company purchased the 12,000 acre Millholland coal tract near Morgantown, W.Va. in 1902 and acquired controlling interests in the Fairmont Coal Company of West Virginia and the Somerset Coal Company of Pennsylvania the following year. These acquisitions boosted Consolidation’s annual production more than six-fold in only three years.
