Mishkan Shalom is blessed to draw from a broad geographic area with a synagogue building with multiple tenants in Manayunk-Roxborough area in NW Philadelphia, as well as a thriving community of online participants around the world.
Through updated translations, readings, and poetry, as well as easily accessible transliteration and new liturgical innovations, Mishkan HaNefesh breathes new life into High Holy Day services. Many people in our community have strong emotional attachments to Gates of Repentance.
In this Live and Learn series, Rabbi Shawn Zevit enters conversations with a number of Mishkan members. It enables us to learn Jewish perspectives on a variety of topics, and know the personal journeys of members of our community.
Mishkan comes from the Hebrew root meaning “to dwell”; the tabernacle was considered to be the earthly dwelling place of God. In Exodus 25:8-9, God instructs Moses to tell the Israelites to build a mikdash (sanctuary) where God may dwell, specifying exactly how the tabernacle should be designed.
Rabbi Yosef Mizrachi was born in 1968. He was raised in Israel where he studied until 1986. In 1986, he was drafted to the Israeli Military (IDF) and served in the Air Force. Immediately after his release from military, he immigrated to New York City where he was involved in the Financial banking District.
