The Murray Hotel, which has been welcoming travelers to Mackinac Island for more than 130 years, has an in-house fudge shop that’s absolutely legendary. Claiming to serve the largest fudge selection on the island, it’s all made fresh daily and flavors include blueberry cheesecake, Butterfinger, and turtle.
Like many of the hotels on Mackinac Island, Lake View Hotel originated in the mid-1800s, initially operating under the Chapman family as Lake View House. The establishment remained in the family’s hands for over a century, until it was purchased by Harry Ryba of Ryba’s Fudge Shops.
Mackinac Island is home to many cultural events, including an annual show of American art from the Masco collection of 19th-century works at the Grand Hotel. Five art galleries operate on the island. Since 1949, the island’s residents have been celebrating the island’s native lilacs with an annual spring 10-day festival.
Mackinac Island is the destination for two sailing races. The island has a sailing club, the Mackinac Island Yacht Club. It serves as the finish line for both the Port Huron to Mackinac Race and the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. The races run a week apart, in July.
