Acoustic emission (AE) testing is a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique that detects and monitors the release of ultrasonic stress waves from localised sources when a material deforms under stress. How does it work? What are the advantages and limitations?
In monitoring applications, MISTRAS’ AE subject matter experts work directly with our clients to determine optimal sensor positions to ensure damages are detected as early as possible. Some typical applications of the Acoustic Emission principle in testing assets and materials include: Defects such as pores, quenching cracks, inclusions, etc.
Acoustic emission sensor is a device that transforms a local dynamic material displacement produced by a stress wave to an electrical signal. AE sensors are typically piezoelectric sensors with elements maid of special ceramic elements like lead zirconate titanate (PZT). These elements generate electric signals when mechanically strained.
Southern Scientific provide invaluable emission monitoring and reporting services to us. They are also quick to offer advice or answer any queries that we may have, and are generally very open and easy to deal with.
The EPA initially promulgated regulations for Acid Rain Program continuous emission monitoring (CEM) requirements at 40 CFR Part 75 on January 11, 1993 (58 FR 3590) and has published numerous revisions to Part 75 since then. The most recent revisions were published on January 24, 2008 (73 FR 4312).
