Gwenllian, daughter of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd was born on 12th June 1282 at Garth Celyn Abergwyngregyn. Eleanor de Montfort, daughter of the French baron Simon de Montfort, was her mother. Eleanor died shortly after the birth of Gwenllian at Pen-y Bryn in Abergwyngregyn where she had spent a period of three years as a prisoner of the English Crown.
Having been taken from her native land so young, Gwenllian is unlikely to have remembered any Welsh she may have learned as a toddler, and perhaps never knew the correct pronunciation of her own name. The priory record-keepers listed her as Wencilian and was herself shown to have signed her name Wentliane.
Today, her ghost is said to still haunt the area of Kidwelly Castle and the field where the battle was fought is known as the Field of Gwenllian. Princess Gwenllian was a warrior, a loyal wife, a brave leader and patriot; her sacrifice was not forgotten.
Gwenllian , by T. James Jones, was inspired by the site of her memorial stone. In Sempringham is by Mererid Hopwood. Hopwood is notable for being the first woman ever to win the Bardic Chair at the National Eistedfodd, Wales’ top honour for poetry.
