It’s 2019 and it’s not enough to follow a celebrity on Instagram or Twitter. Now, celebrities are giving out their digits. Sort of. Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Lopez, Ian Somerhalder, and even the Jonas Brothers have given out their “phone numbers” to fans this year.
That includes first asking yourself whether the benefits of giving out your phone number outweigh the potential risks. You might also want to set up a second phone number to cloak your personal digits altogether. You could share this second phone number with people and brands you don’t entirely trust.
The most important thing to remember is to not give your phone number out right away when online dating. If you’re using a service like Match or eHarmony then you should go through the steps to meet and communicate with new matches online before jumping to phone calls.
Giving your number to someone in a chat room is a gamble, but if you’re being safe about it then there shouldn’t be a problem. If you have concerns about giving out your phone number, express it to the person you’re talking with online.
They can call you. They can give your number to others, who can call you. They can see if the letters associated with the numbers spell something interesting. They can figure out where you were probably living when you first obtained your number. They might be able to know what country you are from (assuming your number includes the country code).
