There will be no more seaside sofas on the coastal walkway when New Plymouth’s beloved Big Wave Cafe shuts down this month. Owner Michael Welsh said he had stopped paying rent on the spot near the East End surf club where it has been since 2008.
Character List Sethe - Sethe, the protagonist of Beloved, is a proud and independent woman who is extremely devoted to her children. Though she barely knew her own mother, Sethe’s motherly instincts are her most striking characteristic. Denver - Sethe’s youngest child, Denver is the most dynamic character in the novel.
Most of the time, the Greek word translated “beloved” is agapētoi, related to the word agape. In the inspired letters, beloved means “friends dearly loved by God.” In the New Testament, the use of the word beloved implies more than human affection. It suggests an esteem for others that comes from recognizing their worth as children of God.
All those adopted into God’s family through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ are beloved by the Father ( John 1:12; Romans 8:15 ). It is an amazing, lavish love: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” ( 1 John 3:1 ).
Sethe’s youngest child, Denver is the most dynamic character in the novel. Though intelligent, introspective, and sensitive, Denver has been stunted in her emotional growth by years of relative isolation. Beloved’s increasing malevolence, however, forces Denver to overcome her fear of the world beyond 124 and seek help from the community.
