It refers to an important developmental milestone delay in regards to motor, speech and language; cognition; social functioning; and activities of daily living (Perna & Loughan, 2013). GDD is seen as a temporary diagnosis for children who are unable to undergo standardized IQ evaluation (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
GDD may co-occur with other disabilities, such as Down syndrome or cerebral palsy. Similarly, GDD itself may be caused by one or more of these other conditions. Since GDD is a general condition, it may present itself in a variety of ways and the possibility of association with other conditions should always be explored by medical professionals.
Often GDD is referred to as a learning disability or an SLD (Specific Learning Disability). Your child with delayed development may appear to be cognitively and sometimes physically immature compared to their peers. Coordination and speech could be affected, as could comprehension or the ability to form friendships.
