Fermilab’s 6,800 acres (28 km 2) sit a top fertile farmland and the prairie restoration project consists of approximately 1,000 acres (4.0 km 2) of that. This project began in 1971 and continues today with the help of Fermilab employees and many community teachers, botanists and volunteers .
Fermilab is home to approximately 1,700 scientists, engineers, technicians and support staff, and hosts about 2,500 visiting scientists from around the world. The laboratory is operated by the Fermi Research Alliance for the U.S. Department of Energy. More information can be found at www.fnal.gov.
Fermilab is America’s particle physics and accelerator laboratory. We bring the world together to solve the mysteries of matter, energy, space and time. Fermilab hosts DUNE and the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility, being built by scientists and engineers from more than 30 countries.
Fermilab also pursues research in quantum information science. It founded the Fermilab Quantum Institute in 2019. Since 2020, it also is home to the SQMS (Superconducting Quantum and Materials Science) center.
From the Cornell Chronicle, March 16, 2021: Fermilab’s Sam Posen has joined the Center for Bright Beams to develop the next generation of superconducting materials that will greatly reduce the costs associated with operating large particle accelerators and lessen their environmental impact.
