It’s takeaway time and El Jannah Express in Newtown is the newest branch of the Lebanese charcoal chicken and garlic sauce chain. The Newtown store located in the thick of King Street has an abridged menu of all the favourites but with another addition: fried chicken!
The first opened in Granville in 1998 and the business slowly grew across western Sydney. This one, called El Jannah Express is the first time the chain has opened a takeaway-style shop. Seating is limited, table service is non-existent, and there are no skewers or shawarma (slowly-turning rotisserie meat) on the menu.

Honey-mustard and sweet-and-spicy sauces are available on the side – a significant departure from hummus and baba ganoush, which are typicall the only sauces available at other El Jannahs. The charcoal chicken nevertheless remains the hero. Served with garlic sauce, it can be had in quarter, half and whole portions.
If you wanna visit El Jannah Blacktown, the easier place to park is inside Westpoint by the way, as finding parking next to the shop is very difficult if not impossible. I’m so glad that there is an outpost of el Jannah in Blacktown.
