In 2007, Boyd Gaming gave the Barbary Coast to Harrah’s Entertainment (now known as Caesars Entertainment) in exchange for the demolished Westward Ho and Stardust Hotel and Casino property to build the now cancelled Echelon Palace. A sign from the hotel at the Neon Museum.
It was originally opened by Michael Gaughan as the Barbary Coast on March 2, 1979. Several nearby resorts were opposed to its construction, partially due to concerns about increased traffic congestion. The property featured Victorian décor and later became part of Gaughan’s company, Coast Casinos.
The Barbary Coast had 150 rooms and suites. With its lavish display of exquisite stained glass, magnificent chandeliers and plush decor, it successfully competed with the larger resorts surrounding it.
In 1984, Barbary added Garden of Earthly Delights, a 30’x5’ stained glass mural on the casino’s west wall, depicting a Victorian era fantasy. This work of art involved ten artists working more than 10,000 hours to complete.
