Definition of amoeba : any of a large genus (Amoeba) of naked rhizopod protozoans with lobed and never anastomosing pseudopodia, without permanent organelles or supporting structures, and of wide distribution in fresh and salt water and moist terrestrial environments broadly : a naked rhizopod or other amoeboid protozoan
While the earliest identified amoebae were approximately 400 to 600 microns in size, both extremely small (between 2 and 3 microns) as well as exceptionally large amoebae (20 cm; visible to the naked eye) have been documented to date. Therefore, amoeba species exhibit a wide range of sizes.
An amoeba (/ ə ˈ m iː b ə /; less commonly spelt ameba or amœba; plural am(o)ebas or am(o)ebae / ə ˈ m iː b i /), often called an amoeboid , is a type of cell or unicellular organism which has the ability to alter its shape, primarily by extending and retracting pseudopods.
Yet, it does not have a well-defined mouth or anus for secretion or excretion. Since every amoeboid cell is a pseudopod, it does not have a definite shape. However, the size of an amoeba cell is around 250 and 750 microns. There are even amoebae that are visible to a human’s naked eyes.
Is Amoeba a cell? Yes, Amoeba is a single-celled organism, meaning one Amoeba consists of only one giant cell. Amoeba belongs to the eukaryotic cells, which means that their genetic material (or DNA) are well organized and enclosed within a membrane by forming a “nucleus”.
